The New Zion Missionary Baptist Church wants you to come to Jesus, while they work at that they will at least get you to come to brisket. this little house right next to the church is almost to easy to miss, and very hard to park at. I was greeted warmly by a great staff. I already knew the story of why they were there, but must briefly mention it. Members of the church work at the BBQ joint and money goes back into the church, and in turn back to mission work and expanding. What a great story, and it makes my meal better knowing I'm helping out a church along with getting some grub.

I had the three meat plate and some ice tea, and sit back in wait. When my food finally came (on some old china plate) it was packed up. There was about 4 ribs, 5 big cuts of brisket, and a cut up link of sausage. The ribs where spare ribs, but prepared like rib tips. I'm not a big fan of that style, and sure enough they had to much fat in them that did not cook, and some cartilage in them. It must have been cooked too fast. It was a shame too because I loved the seasoning rub on them, and ended up doing something I never do, and cut away alot of the rib so I could just get the skin part. The meat itself was also alittle cold and dry. Brisket had a similar tale. While it had a nice pink smoke ring on it, the meat itself was a bit cool and a lifeless gray color instead of the typical bright grey to red. Once again I found the rub really nice, but not enough and lacking a protective bark to provide flavor and lock in moistness. The meat itself was a bit tasteless. Sausage on the other hand was very tasty. I'm not sure if it is homemade or commercial, but it had a good spicy kick to it and great smokiness.

Beans where just from a can, so forgettable, but their potato salad was really something. It was different than most places I have tried and I really liked it. I think they mash the potatoes a bit more than usual. Sauce was dark and smokey. I can tell the meat is suppose to have this sauce drenched all over it, but I personally would never commit such a sin. This places seemed more like a southern BBQ place to me than a Texas place.

I was disappointed as my expectations where high. Still, I would go back if I'm in the area simply for some pie and because I love the business of helping out the church.
